Car Repair II

Years ago (many years ago) I had a Triumph motorcycle. It was a TR-6, and had been customized for racing. It was faster than anybody with good sense should ever drive a motorcycle, but it had shortcomings, notably the electrical system. Triumphs in those days had electrical systems designed by Lucas, and simply the name of the Lucas Company was enough to elicit some pretty unpleasant remarks by any motorcycle mechanic. It did not have a battery; instead it used a capacitor and a zener diode. That aggravating electrical system caused me a lot of headaches.

At one point the bike became almost impossible to start. I had to kick it and kick it and kick it (no battery so no electric start on this one). When I finally got it started, it ran rough. I did everything I could conceive of: new points and plugs and wires, set the timing—nothing seemed to help. Finally, as much as I hated to do it, I took it to the Triumph shop and told them the problem. I hated to admit defeat, plus money was short, but I just could not solve this problem. It should have been simple, and I felt like a fool because I could not fix it.

The Triumph shop called me the next day and said my bike was ready. The next day. Amazing. I asked them what the problem was (wanting to know what it was that was so simple they could have it ready in a day). The guy said it was something that had stumped their factory mechanics for their factory racing team for six months before they finally diagnosed it correctly and solved it. Because it was such a difficult problem to solve, Triumph had agreed to pay the shop for their time. All I had to pay was for the part. Outstanding.

When I picked up the bike, the mechanic showed me the problem. With that modified electrical system, the rotor was the wrong shape.  Since it had puzzled the factory mechanics for so long the company had decided the only cost to the customer for replacement would be the part—sold at cost. I had already replaced the rotor, so I would not have ever considered that the rotor was the problem. I would probably never have fixed that on my own.
